Do you know who this is with Rex? Let me tell you, its someone Rex truly loved since the old days as a kid on his way to greatness. Do you remember the beginnings of the YZ motocross machine? Well this gentleman is the great Don Jones, father of Gary and Dewayne Jones who developed the YZ for Yamaha which was truly pivotal in the advancement of American and World motocross! Photo courtesy Tom Chavez. Thanks Tom for this moment of love.

Yours truly (L) and the Rocket in 2005. Rex is demonstrating the old hand on helmet start rule while off the bike and the right foot atop the shift lever. They really put us through it on those starts. Bobby Dresslar thought it was funny but it didn't stop Rex from winning anyway. The next photo (R) is Rex and I with our old friend the late Biff Brenn. Biff was an absolute MX maniac. So much so he used to sponsor all us kids, about 10 or 15 at a time just so he could get away from home to go racing. I can remember many times he would call me up like Tuesday and say "Eric, get the bikes ready, we are going racing Friday night at Corona, then off to Saddleback on Saturday, then to Carlsbad Sunday! Those were the greatest days of racing for me and everybody loved Biff and his cut-up jokes that literally caused one to double over LOL. During the hard times Rex would help Biff get bikes and gear together, even gave him stuff just so Biff could go have fun. Sadly we lost Biff to cancer shortly after this photo.

Awesome page. As you know Rex Staten raced and won two major mx championships in South Africa back in the early 1980's along with fellow American riders Jim Tarantino ( who still lives in South Africa ) and Larry Wosick. What a phenomenal rider I still have a BP Yamaha MX shirt Rex personally autographed for me at Hammersdale motocross track in Durban where Rex based himself during his stay in SA. He is still a hero in my eyes after all these years.
ReplyDeleteGreat page. Love Rex and his rides with Cz. In the pic of Tom White's 2006 tribute to Joel Robert I see Ron Pomeroy, (Jim's brother, far left holding gas tank) and the far right listed as Torsten Hallman is actually Gunner Lindstrom.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jim, I finally made the Lindstrom correction. Hope your doing well.
